Psychodiagnostic Assessment

A psychodiagnostic assessment focuses on identifying any mental health diagnoses for which an individual meets diagnostic criteria. For some people, receiving such a diagnosis can allow them to better understand the mental health difficulties and symptoms that they have been experiencing. While the results of a psychodiagnostic assessment can also be useful for treatment planning, this type of assessment is not required in order to receive treatment services at Dr. Schell’s practice (i.e., you do not need a mental health diagnosis or a psychodiagnostic assessment to access treatment services).

A psychodiagnostic assessment is typically completed over the course of about three 50-minute sessions, which include a clinical interview and more targeted structured diagnostic interviews. As well, individuals are also asked to complete some self-report measures (i.e., questionnaires). Once the assessment is complete, a feedback session is scheduled to share and discuss the results of the assessment along with recommendations. A comprehensive assessment report is also provided to the client following the feedback session.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy services are available for children and their parents, adolescents and adults. Dr. Schell provides evidence-based treatment, most often integrating strategies from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Dr. Schell provides therapy for a variety of presenting concerns, including: emotional dysregulation, depression, anxiety, suicidality and self-harm behaviours, behavioural difficulties, trauma, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. More information about Dr. Schell’s treatment approach is available in the About section.

During an initial intake session, an assessment interview is completed in order to determine an individual’s current areas of difficulty as well as their strengths, and the person’s goals for therapy are also discussed. An additional intake session with parents is typically completed for therapy with children and adolescents. Following this assessment process, a treatment plan is developed in a collaborative manner, and recommended frequency of therapy sessions is discussed. Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes in length.

Group Therapy

Group therapy offers evidence-based therapy in a small group setting (typically 6-8 people), and provides a more affordable treatment option compared to individual therapy. Attending a group with others struggling with similar difficulties can sometimes offer validation, support, connection, and reassurance that we are not alone in our struggles. Therapy groups are intended to be a welcoming, safe, and non-judgmental space to work together on therapy goals using evidence-based treatment strategies for difficulties such as depression, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation.

Therapy groups are run at various times throughout the year, with scheduling typically based on need and interest.
